To work with pregnant women needs knowledge and confidence and an awareness of the problems associated with pregnancy, both those considered to be minor and more importantly, those that require immediate care. I trained under Suzanne Enzer who is not only a well-known reflexologist, but also the pioneer of Maternity Reflexology who also worked as a midwife for many years. I am a fully qualified Maternity Reflexologist. Not only does this mean that I am able to give pregnant women the best possible care, it means that I am able to treat newly born babies and their mothers as well as treat those couples who are having fertility issues. The treatment is as always, patient centred and both the unborn baby and the mother are treated during the session.
Reflexology helps on many levels. The pelvis can be stretched by flexing the feet, thus avoiding a lot of the pain that occurs during pregnancy as the baby grows and develops, the endocrine system can be balanced, helping with issues such as the extreme tiredness felt by many expectant mothers and of course in the early stages, morning sickness. Heartburn problems can be reduced by increasing relaxation and by keeping the baby relaxed and comfortable within the uterus. Towards the end of the term, the endocrine system can be encouraged to work at its optimum capacity, ensuring that there are plenty of endorphins available when they are needed for pain relief at the time of the baby’s birth. There are of course, many other benefits to having regular appointments before, during and after pregnancy.
Working with pregnant clients is a wonderfully rewarding experience. To be involved with a new life is a privilege and as a reflexologist I am aware of the depth of trust invested in me and would never abuse that trust. There is much going on emotionally, physically and spiritually during pregnancy and unfortunately real life with all its troubles and traumas carries on causing more stress and increasing the less pleasant side effects of bringing new life into the world. Reflexology can help on all levels, rebalancing the system and re-empowering the mother to be, enabling her to cope more readily.
